PCdoB Condemns Repression in India and Expresses Solidarity with CPI(M)
The Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) expresses its strongest solidarity with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) — CPI(M), in the face of the brutal repression unleashed by the Delhi Police against demonstrations in defense of democracy, the right to vote, and political freedoms.
On October 10, the Delhi Police detained CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby; Pinarayi Vijayan, party leader and Leader of the Opposition in Kerala; as well as members of the Politburo, the Central Committee, parliamentarians, and other prominent communist leaders. Nearly the entire leadership of the party was taken into police custody.
The PCdoB condemns the violence, the police siege, and the arbitrary arrests. Particularly serious are the reports that protesters were assaulted and forcibly taken onto buses; that party leaders remained confined for hours in police vehicles without food, water, or access to medication; and that detained women were prevented from using the restroom. These acts demand an immediate investigation, accountability for those involved, and redress for the victims.
The PCdoB demands the immediate release of all those who remain in custody, the dropping of any charges arising from the legitimate exercise of the right to protest, and an end to the persecution of CPI(M) leaders, students, workers, journalists, and people’s organizations participating in the protests.
Long live international solidarity!
